Welcome to Labannya

Shyampukur LABANNYA is a Kolkata-based non-profit society registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 (WBSRA-1961) in the year 2011, bearing Registration No. S/IL/80688.

The organization has its registered office at Nibedita Lane, Baghbazar, Kolkata – 700003, and its operational office at Astra Tower, South Block, New Town, Kolkata. LABANNYA maintains all updated statutory compliances, including 12AA, 80G, CSR, NGO Darpan, and FCRA registrations.

Mission of Labannya

Women’s safety and security in the workplace constitute the primary agenda of the organization. The four fundamental pillars of LABANNYA are:

The organization adopts a multi-dimensional approach towards holistic and sustainable rural development through continuous livelihood generation, complemented by training, skill development, infrastructure support, monitoring, and market linkage services.

The People Behind Labannya

The organization is led by Ms. Mithu B., Founder Secretary and Chief Functionary Officer, and is supported by a dedicated team of board members, consultants, employees, volunteers, associates, and well-wishers across the country.

What Does Labannya Do?

Over the last fourteen years, LABANNYA has undertaken numerous community welfare initiatives. Until 2024, the organization primarily focused its activities within the urban areas of Kolkata, working mainly in the sectors of women empowerment, health, and cultural development. Through its community-centric approach, the organization has continuously strived to improve the quality of life of marginalized and vulnerable sections of society by promoting social inclusion, awareness, and capacity building.

What is Ongoing?

In 2025, LABANNYA embarked upon a new journey by significantly expanding both its geographical reach and thematic areas of intervention.
The organization has launched the SEM (Solar Enlighten Mission) in the Gosaba Block of the Indian Sundarbans. The project aims to enhance the safety, dignity, and quality of life of rural women by providing sustainable solar lighting solutions in remote and underserved villages.
This pioneering initiative is among the first community-led solar safety programmes undertaken by an NGO in West Bengal. The project particularly focuses on reducing risks faced by women after dusk, including snake-bite incidents, insecurity during movement, and other challenges associated with off-grid living conditions.
In 2026, LABANNYA embarked upon another significant journey by extending support and services to thousands of rural entrepreneurs engaged in fisheries and livestock farming across West Bengal. This state-wide initiative has been launched with the mission of generating sustainable employment opportunities for unemployed youth, women, marginal and small farmers, and members of the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Class (OBC) communities.
The programme adopts a comprehensive approach encompassing entrepreneurship development, capacity building, technical consultancy, training, infrastructure facilitation, monitoring, and market linkage support, thereby promoting inclusive rural development and strengthening livelihood resilience across the state.
Today, LABANNYA is steadily emerging as a dynamic organization committed to women empowerment, environmental sustainability, livelihood generation, entrepreneurship development, and climate-resilient rural transformation, with a special focus on the vulnerable communities of the Indian Sundarbans and other rural regions of West Bengal.
